In the spring of 1988, I saw an ad in the Banar, for Men`s Fastball.
I had only played 2 months of Little League when I was 11 years old, but I thought, what the heck.
I received a phone call from Brett Dugan, welcoming me to the "Red Team," which would later be named "Tri Co Draughts".
In that year we won the League and the Playoffs. Thanks Brett.
This was the start of a very enjoyable 21 years.
During that time I have met hundreds of players, their spouses, girl friends, parents, children and even their pets.
As well, I`ve had the opportunity, to play under the guidance of a lot of umpires.
Many, many friendships were forged over those years.
For that I`m eternally thankful.
One of the best moments was playing with my son Jamie. Playing with him for 13 years has been great. Thanks Jamie.
One person I`d like to thank is Alan Booth. Alan has been my right hand ever since he joined the Draughts. If you needed someone to call the guys about a rain out or that the game is still on, he was there for me. I need a volunteer for the equipment, Al was there front and center, even for a whole month in succession. Al can you head down to the diamond early to do the field lining, can you put the line up together, can you look after the beer, can you cover for me at the monthly meeting? Al can you do this or Al can you do that.He never said no.
Alan, thank you for everything, and for being a great friend.
I would like to thank Wayne Hunter, and all those who were involved, in naming the Sportsman Award in my name.
The feeling I had at that moment was "PRICELESS".
That was the BEST moment in my B.M.F.L. career. Sorry Jamie.
Thanks Wayne, and also to your committee.
I will treasure the memories forever.
I`d like to thank Steve Wallman for his kind words, and Stephane Vinette`s follow up blog in "A Class Act is Retiring".
To all my teammates a special thank you.
You helped make my job as team rep, that much easier, and playing ball that much more enjoyable.
The friendship we shared, both on the field, and off the field, was incredible, and will always be cherished.
To everyone I`ve met, a big THANK YOU for helping me enjoy my 21 years in the B.M.F.L.
Finally,to my wife Lise, a big hug and kiss and a huge thanks for supporting me through the good times and the bad times, (mainly the injuries). She is just like Alan, my right hand.Always there when I need a hand.
The hardest thing, was having to leave the cottage, at no later than 2:00 pm, on a beautiful day, to get back for a 5:00pm game on a Sunday, and even earlier if we were the visiting team that had to do the field lining. She would always just grin and bare it.
Have a great winter, and I`ll see you around the ball park next year.
Keep a Coke in the cooler for me.
Thanks
Dennis
